Board Approves Five Pieces of New Lab Equipment

At the December 11, 2018 Board Meeting, Lab Manager, Sheena Hill, presented the assessment of need for five lab equipment items. All were approved unanimously. 


DxM MicroScan WalkAway System 

 MicroScan panel technologies provide proven detection of emerging resistance to the toughest pathogens, including CRE, ESBL, VISA, VRSA, and MRSA. It provides comprehensive, up to-date selection of antimicrobial agents. The BCI DxM MicroScan WalkAway System has updated CLSI guidelines allowing the most up to date correlation for appropriate antibiotic sensitivity reports for all microorganisms with regard to the specific patient source. And theBCI DxM MicroScan WalkAway System has automatic notification when isolates require attention such as notification to the Washington State DOH for antibiotic resistant organisms.


Biomerieux Vidas 3

The Biomerieux Vidas 3 tests for procalcitonin (PCT) which is a specific marker for differentiating bacterial from non-infective causes of inflammation. It can be used to guide initiation and duration of antibiotic therapy in patients with suspected sepsis, and reduce the duration of hospital stay.

Early detection of the increased PCT level is extremely important in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients. This increase helps the clinician make a quick decision. Measuring procalcitonin levels for antibiotic treatment decisions in patients can help reduce antibiotic exposure without worsening the mortality rate. 


Siemens CA-660-Coagulation Analyzer

Mid Valley Hospital Laboratory will be able to obtain results for PT, INR, PTT, Fibrinogen, and D-Dimerwithin an hour, and begin treatment. The reliability and fast turn around time of Siemens CA-660-Coagulation Analyzer isbeneficial to rural communities such as Omak to treat patients immediately and not relyon send out to other facilities or reference laboratories.


Biomerieux Filmarray 2.0 D/S

The FilmArray® Blood Culture Identification (BCID) Panel tests for a comprehensive set of 24 gram-positive, gram-negative and yeast pathogens and three antibiotic resistance genes associated with bloodstream infections. The BCID Panel detects and identifies the most common causes of bloodstream infections.

Quickly identifying the probable cause of sepsis may help clinicians reduce the time to appropriate antimicrobial therapy and positively impact patient survival. Sepsis is a major challenge in hospitals, where it’s one of the leading causes of death. 

The ability for patient to receive the appropriate antibiotic sooner which saves lives, shortens length of stay and improved hospital and patient savings. This will decrease our antibiotic days per patient metric, in keeping with our hospitals commitment to Antimicrobial Stewardship and combating antibiotic resistance and provide a huge savings to both hospital and patient.

The Ortho Vitros 5600 Integrated System Chemistry Analyzer allows us to maximize efficiency by increasing our lab’s test capacities, decreasing turn around time on send out tests, and allows for the addition of the Procalcitonin test essential in for Mid-Valley Hospitals Antibiotic Stewardship Program.
