Okanogan County Project Awarded $50,000

Mid Valley Hospital Board of Commissioner External Relations Committee Chairman, Jerry Bowes presented a $50,000 check from the Washington Health Foundation to Nancy Nash, Dr. Grace Yelland and Lois Hale at a recent Board meeting at Mid Valley Hospital. Mid Valley Hospital, Okanogan Public Health, Family Health Centers, Okanogan School District, Serena Fiacco School of Dance, Fuerza Latina, WVC Omak Nursing Program, Okanogan and Brewster Public School Districts and Okanogan-Douglas District Hospital have collaborated in a proposed project titled “Connections to Health for Okanogan County”. “Connections to Health Through Engaging in Healthy Habits” will offer free Hip Hop to Health classes to children ages 8-12 and 13-18 in the Okanogan School District. Each 6-week session will teach hip hop dance moves and include instruction about nutrition, prevention of diseases related to obesity, and the importance of exercise and healthy choices to decrease health risks, increase strength, flexibility, endurance, cardiovascular/aerobic capacity, alertness, and self esteem. Parent events will allow students to perform and will include nutrition and health education to provide families with the knowledge to improve nutrition at home and promote healthy life styles. “Connections to Health Through Language Access” is aimed at the lack of trained medical interpreters in Okanogan County. Three interpreter training classes to be held in Tonasket, Omak, and Brewster. An additional class will be offered at Brewster High School for bilingual members of the Civic Engagement class. Curriculum will include medical terminology, interpreter ethics, interpreting styles, etc. The classes are free of charge and participants will be encouraged to take the DSHS exam and become certified medical interpreters. “Connections to Health and Illness Prevention” includes funding to continue the Spanish language radio health education program, “Viva La Salud y La Familia”. This program is aired on KOMW every Sunday afternoon and is an important source of information on a variety of health topics to the Latino population throughout the county.
